The Mitten Project

By Bp. Mary Ann Croisant | November 7, 2009

“…I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40

The Mitten Project
Diocese of the Road to Emmaus

The Mitten ProjectChicago gets cold in the winter – a forbidding, bone-chilling kind of cold. On the very edge of the north side, in the Rogers Park neighborhood, there is a grammar school (kindergarten through 8th grade) where the students do not have much in the way of resources. A very large percentage of them depend on the Federally-funded breakfast and lunch programs.

Winter coats are largely non-existent…the children wear multiple sweatshirts, one over the other, to provide some warmth. Mittens and hats are beyond the reach of most.

Last summer, we began an outreach project that involved knitters and crocheters from around the world. In the name of God and counting on God’s mercy, I asked fellow “yarn folk” to contribute whatever they could in the way of knitted items for some cold children. Before long, packages started arriving and were put into a box for the donation project.

Early in November, the mitten project was turned over to the principal of Gale School, who was delighted to have a box at the ready for this winter’s cold winds. In the way of Independent Catholics, I was able to reach out to another group (The Community of St. Francis, part of the Ecumenical Catholic Communion) to get the delivery accomplished…because I have relocated to sunny Georgia.

These are exactly the kinds of ministries and outreach that we in the autocephalous sacramental movement are able to excel in and indeed should be active with. Often times we may be small groups of faithful folks but we can collectively make a big difference in the lives of our community.
