In a world where love is in short supply and often hard to find we should celebrate it when it blooms and support it when it grows, regardless of the form or expression between consenting adults. These forms and expressions of love include a myriad of what have often been called “alternative lifestyles” but in fact are simply varied expressions of love blooming within our lives.

Some of these varied expressions of love include relationships of people who may be (LGBTQIAPP) lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, questioning, intersexual, asexual, pansexual, and polyamorous. All too often the mainline institutional churches have abandoned these groups of people because their relationships were perceived outside of what is “Biblically acceptable” a distinction determined by the more conservative and limited interpretation of scripture by these same exclusionary churches. All too often the mainline institutional churches have fixated upon the act of sex instead of the relationship of love. The church has had a long a unhealthy fascination with human sexuality only to condemn it at every turn. It’s far past the time that the church get out of our sex lives and get into our love lives.

Sexuality is a God given gift and should be celebrated, respected, and enjoyed accordingly. It is time for the church to renounce its obsession on the physical act of sex between consenting adults and instead reaffirm human sexuality in all of its beauty and diversity by promoting healthy sexual relationships between consenting adults. Chastity and not sex needs to be the focus of the church and its clergy.

Chastity is an affirmation of the Resurrection of the body, and therefore leads us into responsible, nurturing physical relationships founded on Love. Chastity is love which comes from the body, the mind, and the spirit in harmony, without compulsion, possessiveness, or selfishness. It is love, sex, and physicalness made obedient to God. Chastity should not be confused with celibacy as is sometimes the case.

Chastity is a part of our calling and life-style, but is also a gift of grace. It uniquely frees the hearts of men and women so they can become more fervent in love for God and all humanity. It is the confirmation of our responsibility for the whole world. It is the most perfect manifestation of the love between Christ and his Bride. Through chastity we are freed to find a truly loving relationship with ourselves, our families, friends, and spouses, the world we share, and God himself. Chastity is our taste of the Kingdom of God.

In short, the conversation in the churches of today should be on love and not on sex and to that end we celebrate love when it blooms and support it when it grows, regardless of the form or expression between consenting adults and for this reason we launch Celebrate Love.

It is the belief of this ministry that love is an outward and visible sign to the community of the invisible God living in our midst – the living God who bears fruit in the lives of people who love one another. They are an ever-present sign of His Love in the world. There is special grace and ministry within every committed relationship that God has joined together. While the fruit they bear is more than genetically linked offspring, though certainly the bearing of children is a blessing and also evidence of the shared love. Moreover, the harvest of their fruit should show a strengthened understanding of the sacrificial nature of love that we are all called to. It is in this relationship, one to another, that we begin to truly grasp God’s love for us, His commitment to us and our own call to “love one another as He has loved us.” It is through the diversity of loving relationships between consenting adults that we begin to see the diversity of God’s love for the whole of creation.

It is fitting that this ministry to the marginalized and abandoned, the LGBTQIAPP (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, questioning, intersexual, asexual, pansexual, polyamorous) of the church should launch on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On this day we are called to take a long look at the heart of Jesus and then to take a long look at our own hearts. In Christ we see a heart beating for the love of the entirety of creation, for all his children, regardless. In our own hearts do we see the same thing? Do we celebrate love in the world around us? Do we recognize it for what it is and for what it can become? Or in instances of “alternative relationships” do we fixate on the genetalia and the sex act instead of the heart and the love act?

Celebrate Love is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and also to the LGBTQIAPP (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, questioning, intersexual, asexual, pansexual, polyamorous) people of faith who have been abandoned, thrown away, marginalized, and or abused by the church and her ministers. We stand with open and welcoming arms to welcome you back home to the heart of Christ. Not all Christian churches are full of hate, intolerance, and judgementalness – we certainly are not. We welcome you, and not just some of you but every one of you!

Come, celebrate love with us and let us celebrate your love too!

Please visit www.celebrate-love.org for more information.

Welcome!

Christ’s Catholic Church is a gathering of individual Christians and various ministries who support catholic unity. We have come together with at least one unifying motive: a love for Christ, His Church, and the Sacraments.

We are open to traditional, conservative, moderate, progressive, and liberal thought, doctrine, and liturgical expression. Members of this communion walk many paths and come from diverse Christian traditions, but a common thread that binds us is a deep abiding love of Christ, His Church, and the Sacraments. That is our centering point. That is our unity.

Christ’s Catholic Church sees itself as only one expression of God’s truth among many such Christian expressions and it holds firm to the belief that the Church really is one. It knows no national boundaries, no ethnic allegiance, no historic founder except Jesus Christ, no imperial court, and no secular government. Being truly free in the “free church” tradition, it has known neither papal prince nor earthly king. It seeks to be truly universal or catholic and ecumenical, serving all of God’s children with love, welcoming all to His Sacraments, and inviting all people to His care and fellowship. It does so regardless of race, creed, sex, sexual orientation, historic tradition, or state of grace, and at the same time holds fast to the Apostolic Faith.

We practice an open communion welcoming all Christians. We would turn down no one from receiving our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.

During the liturgy you are invited to receive our Lord in the Eucharist. You will have received general absolution during the General Confession. All your sins will have been forgiven. No matter how you have lived your life, no matter what you have done before, after your confession the Lord accepts you just the way you are. Please, come to the table he has prepared for you.

And recounting all your wonderful deeds.
Lord, I love the house in which you dwell
And the place where your glory abides.
Do not sweep me away with sinners,
Nor my life with those who thirst for blood,
Whose hands are full of evil plots,
And their right hand full of bribes.
As for me, I will live with integrity;
Redeem me, O Lord, and have pity on me.
My foot stands on level ground;
In the full assembly I will bless the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
IT IS RIGHT TO GIVE HIM THANKS AND PRAISE.

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise.
GLORY TO YOU FOR EVER AND EVER.

At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.
BY YOUR WILL THEY WERE CREATED AND HAVE THEIR BEING.

From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.
HAVE MERCY, LORD, FOR WE ARE SINNERS IN YOUR SIGHT.

Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a maiden, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.
BY HIS BLOOD, HE RECONCILED US. BY HIS WOUNDS, WE ARE HEALED.

And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

All:
HOLY,HOLY,HOLY,LORD,
GOD OF POWER AND MIGHT,
HEAVEN AND EARTH
ARE FULL OF YOUR GLORY
HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST.

Priest:
Truly holy are you, truly blessed are you, truly loving are you, and truly wondrous are you, God our heavenly Father.

Here shall follow a proper memorial.

Priest:
Therefore, most merciful Father, we humbly beg and entreat you through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord, to accept and bless these + gifts, these + offerings, these + holy and spotless sacrifices, which we offer to you for your holy Catholic Church, that you would be pleased to keep her in peace, preserve her in unity, and govern her throughout the world; especially for those who keep the apostolic faith in this place, with .N. our (Abbot, Bishop).

Where indicated, the names of the living may be read.

Priest:
Remember also, O Lord, (your servants .N. and .N. and) all here present, whose faith, devotion, and love are known to you, for whom we offer this sacrifice of praise, on their behalf, and on behalf of all who are theirs, for the redemption of their souls, the integrity of those in authority over them, the purity of all pastors, the chastity of virgins, the courage of the lonely; for fair weather; for the abundance of the earth, the return of peace and the end of turmoil, the safety of the people and the return of captives; for the hopes of those here present, the memory of the martyrs, the remission of our sins, the correction of our errors, and the gentle repose of the dead; for bishops, priests, and all in ecclesiastical orders; for all rulers, especially .N. our president; for safety in our journey; for our lost brothers and sisters; for our faithful brothers and sisters; for our brothers and sisters whom from the dimness of the world you, O Lord, have lovingly summoned; that divine goodness may receive them in the eternal peace of the heavenly light; for our brothers and sisters who are afflicted with various sorrows, that divine goodness may lovingly care for them; and for the hope of protection and salvation for all who here pay their vows to you, the eternal, living, and true God.

In the unity of holy fellowship…

Here the priest may say the proper communicants.

…and venerating the memory first of all of the Virgin Mary, Mother of our God and Lord Jesus Christ, along with blessed Joseph, his foster father, and also blessed John the Baptist, the blessed Apostles Andrew, Peter, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James, Thaddeus, and Simon; the blessed Paul, Mark, Luke, Mary Magdalene, Joseph of Arimathea, Stephen, Anthony, Martin, Ninian, David, Brendan, Patrick, Columba, Columbanus, Kieran, Kevin, Comgal, Gall, Brigid, Dymphna, Ita, Samthann, Melangell, Willibrord, Martin of Westwood, Karl Prüter and of all your saints, through whose merits and prayers, grant that we may ever be strengthened in all things by the help of your protection; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

We therefore beg you to accept, O Lord, this offering of our worship and that of your whole household, which we offer in honor of our Lord Jesus Christ, and in memory of your martyrs in this Church, which your servants built to the honor of your Name. We beseech you, O Lord, to deliver us and all people from the worship of idols and turn us to you, the true God.

Almighty Father, regulate the days of our lives that they may be spent in your peace; spare us from eternal damnation and help us to be numbered in the fold with your flock; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.
Here the priest may bow three times, while striking his breast, and saying each time:

Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on me!
Jesus, Bearer of my sins, have mercy on me!
Jesus, Redeemer of the world, have mercy on me!

Priest:
And so dear Father, we who have been redeemed by your Christ, and made a new people through your Holy Spirit in the waters of baptism, now bring before you these gifts. We summon you O God, most merciful Father, to bless +, consecrate +, and approve +, this offering, making it reasonable and acceptable. We summon the Holy Spirit radiating like light, shining all around us and upon us + and upon this offering, so that it may become for us the forgiving and healing Body + and Blood + of Jesus, child born in a stable, High King of heaven made flesh ever to dwell among us.

Who on the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

The priest elevates the host, kneels, and makes the sign of the cross.

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

The priest elevates the chalice, kneels, and makes the sign of the cross.

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving:

All:
WE CELEBRATE HIS LIFE, DEATH, AND RESURRECTION,
AS WE AWAIT THE DAY OF HIS COMING.

Here the priest may bow three times, while striking his breast, and saying each time:

Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on me!
Jesus, Bearer of my sins, have mercy on me!
Jesus, Redeemer of the world, have mercy on me!

Priest:
We your servants, O Lord, and with us your holy people, calling to mind the blessed passion of the same Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord, and also his resurrection from the grave and glorious ascension into heaven, offer to your supreme majesty, of the gifts bestowed upon us, a pure +, holy +, and perfect + sacrifice, the holy + Bread of eternal life, and the + Chalice of everlasting salvation.

Be pleased to look upon these offerings with a gracious and kindly countenance, and accept them as it pleased you to accept the offering of your just servant Abel, and the sacrifice of our father Abraham, and that which your great high priest Melchizedek offered to you, a holy sacrifice and a spotless victim.

Humbly we implore you, Almighty God, bid these offerings be carried by the hands of your holy angels to your Altar on high, before your divine majesty, so that those of us who, by sharing in the sacrifice at this Altar, shall receive the sacred + Body and + Blood of your Son, and may be filled W with every grace and heavenly blessing. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Remember, O Lord, the names of those who have gone before us + in the sign of faith and rest in the sleep of peace.

Remember, also, all the holy and venerable priests throughout the world who offer for the whole assembly of the Catholic Church a spiritual sacrifice to God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, that they may, with the ranks of the venerable patriarchs, prophets, apostles, martyrs, and all the saints, graciously intercede for us to the Lord our God.

All:
TO US ALSO YOUR SINFUL SERVANTS, WHO TRUST IN YOUR BOUNDLESS MERCY, GRACIOUSLY GRANT FELLOWSHIP AND A PLACE WITH YOUR HOLY APOSTLES AND MARTYRS AND ALL YOUR SAINTS. INTO THEIR COMPANY WE BEG YOU ADMIT US, NOT WEIGHING OUR UNWORTHINESS, BUT FREELY GRANTING US FORGIVENESS. THROUGH JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD. AMEN.

Priest:
It is ever through Jesus Christ your Son that all good gifts, created by you, Almighty Father, are by you sanctified +, endowed with life +, blessed +, and bestowed upon us.

Priest:
Lord God of our Fathers: God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name.

People:
RISEN LORD, BE KNOWN TO US IN THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD.

Here the priest elevates the host over the chalice.

Priest:
Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer

Leader:
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:

All:
OUR FATHER, WHO ART IN HEAVEN,
HALLOWED BE THY NAME,
THY KINGDOM COME,
THY WILL BE DONE,
ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.
GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD,
AND FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES,
AS WE FORGIVE THOSE
WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US.
AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION
BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM,
AND THE POWER, AND THE GLORY
FOR EVER AND EVER. AMEN.

The Breaking of the Bread

The priest breaks the bread, and says the following:

Priest:
Alleluia, Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us!

People:
THEREFORE LET US KEEP THE FEAST, ALLELUIA!

During Lent or with presanctified elements, the following is used:

Leader:
The cup of blessing which we bless,
is it not a sharing in the Blood of Christ?
The bread which we break,
is it not a sharing in the Body of Christ?

People:
BECAUSE THERE IS ONE BREAD,
WE WHO ARE MANY ARE ONE BODY,
FOR WE ALL PARTAKE OF THE ONE BREAD.

Here the priest shall reverently place a particle of the host into the chalice, saying:

Priest:
May the mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ be for us a sign of salvation unto everlasting life. AMEN.

The Adoration

One of the following adoration prayers is offered, the leader and people alternating:

Behold the Lamb of God,
ALLELUIA!
Behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
ALLELUIA!
My peace I give to you,
ALLELUIA!
My own peace I leave with you.
ALLELUIA!
The King of Heaven comes in peace,
ALLELUIA!
Full of the fragrance of life.
ALLELUIA!
Sing to the Lord a new song,
ALLELUIA!
Sing to the Lord, all the whole earth.
ALLELUIA!
They knew the Lord,
ALLELUIA!
In the breaking of the Bread.
ALLELUIA!

Anima Christi

Soul of my Savior, sanctify my breast;
ALLELUIA!
Body of Christ, be thou my saving guest;
ALLELUIA!
Blood of my Savior, bathe me in thy tide,
ALLELUIA!
Wash me with water flowing from thy side.
ALLELUIA!
Strength and protection may thy passion be;
ALLELUIA!
O blessed Jesus, hear and answer me;
ALLELUIA!
Deep in thy wounds, Lord, hide and shelter me;
ALLELUIA!
So shall I never, never part from thee.
ALLELUIA!
Guard and defend me from the foe malign;
ALLELUIA!
In death’s dread moments make me only thine;
ALLELUIA!
Call me and bid me come to thee on high,
ALLELUIA!
Where I may praise thee with thy saints for aye.
ALLELUIA!

Priest:
Come, eat My Bread.

People:
AND DRINK THE WINE
I HAVE MINGLED FOR YOU.

Priest:
He who eats My Body and drinks My Blood

People:
REMAINS IN ME, AND I IN HIM.

Leader:
Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, in your tender mercy send us the Spirit of the Lamb. +

People:
JESUS, LAMB OF GOD: HAVE MERCY ON US. JESUS, BEARER OF OUR SINS: HAVE MERCY ON US. JESUS, REDEEMER OF THE WORLD, GIVE US YOUR PEACE.

Leader:
Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his table.

All:
LORD, I AM NOT WORTHY TO RECEIVE YOU, BUT ONLY SAY THE WORD AND I SHALL BE HEALED.

The Communion

Hymns may be sung before and after communion. The ministers and the people receive the sacrament in both kinds.

Deacon:
All are invited to receive our Lord in the Eucharist. You have received general absolution. All your sins have been forgiven. No matter how you have lived your life, no matter what you have done before, the Lord accepts you just the way you are. Come to the table he has prepared for you.

The bread and chalice are given to the people with these words:

The Body of Christ broken for you. AMEN.
The Blood of Christ shed for you. AMEN.

If the Christian names of the communicants are known to the minister, they may be used.

Postcommunion

Leader:
The Lord be with you.

People:
AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT.

Leader:
Let us pray.

The people may kneel. A proper thanksgiving may be used if one is appointed for the day, or else the following:

Leader:
We believe, O Lord, that in this breaking of your Body and pouring out of your Blood, that we become a redeemed people. We confess that by our sharing of this Sacrament we are strengthened to endure in hope, until we lay hold and enjoy its true fruits in your heavenly kingdom. AMEN.

All:
MY BELOVED LORD JESUS CHRIST, MOST SWEET AND MOST KIND, WHO EVEN NOW, OF YOUR OWN GREAT GOODNESS, HAS ENTERED INTO THIS POOR AND HUMBLE ABODE, ADORN IT AND ENRICH IT WITH YOUR TREASURES, THAT IT MAY BE MADE WORTHY OF YOUR INDWELLING. TAKE UP YOUR REST HERE WITHIN ME, THAT MY HEART MAY FIND ITS REST IN YOU ALONE.

LET IT NOT SATISFY YOU, O LORD, TO HAVE GIVEN ME YOUR SACRED BODY AND BLOOD; BUT BE PLEASED TO GIVE ME ALSO THE TREASURES OF GRACE WHICH YOU BRING WITH YOU; FOR IT WILL PROFIT ME LITTLE TO EAT THE BREAD OF ETERNAL LIFE AND DRINK OF THE CHALICE OF EVERLASTING SALVATION, IF I REMAIN UNFILLED BY YOUR GRACE.

BE SO KIND TO GRANT ME, O LORD, A HEART COMPLETELY TRANSFORMED BY YOU INTO LOVE; GIVE ME A LIFE THAT SHALL BE ALL YOURS AND A QUIET DEATH THAT SHALL BE THE BEGINNING OF ETERNAL LIFE.

THAT IS WHAT I LOOK FOR, PRAY FOR, AND HOPE FOR FROM YOU, MY ETERNAL GOD, BY VIRTUE OF THIS MOST BLESSED AND HOLY SACRAMENT. IT IS IN YOUR SWEET AND PRECIOUS NAME I PRAY. AMEN.

The Final Blessing and Dismissal

Then the Abbot or Bishop if present, shall bless the people.

Priest:
May the Father of Life pour out his grace upon you, + AMEN.
May the Son of God be Lord in all your ways, + AMEN.
May the Holy Spirit comfort you and make you strong, + AMEN.

And may the blessing of God: + the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with you and abide with you this day and may you be held forever in the hollow of his hand. AMEN.

Then the Deacon, or the appointed person, shall dismiss the people with the following:

Deacon:
Go out into the world in peace;
have courage; hold on to what is good;
return no one evil for evil;
strengthen the fainthearted;
support the weak; help the suffering;
honor everyone; love and serve God;
rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit!

People:
THANKS BE TO GOD!
ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA!

The Liturgy of the Holy Eucharist

With the people standing an introit may be said or sung, a hymn may also be sung.

Priest:
+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. AMEN.

Let us go before the altar of the Lord.
O Lord, open thou my lips.

People:
AND MY MOUTH SHALL SHOW FORTH THY PRAISE.

Priest:
Our help is in the name of the Lord,

People:
WHO MADE HEAVEN AND EARTH.

The Confession of Sin

Priest:
Beloved in the Lord: Let us draw near with a true heart, and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching him, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to grant us forgiveness.

All kneel and say together:

All:
ALMIGHTY AND MOST MERCIFUL FATHER
WE HAVE ERRED AND STRAYED FROM THY WAYS LIKE LOST SHEEP.
WE HAVE FOLLOWED TOO MUCH THE DEVICES
AND DESIRES OF OUR OWN HEARTS.
WE HAVE OFFENDED AGAINST THY HOLY LAWS.
WE HAVE LEFT UNDONE THOSE THINGS WHICH WE OUGHT TO HAVE DONE,
AND WE HAVE DONE THOSE THINGS WHICH WE OUGHT NOT TO HAVE DONE.
BUT THOU, O LORD, HAVE MERCY UPON US.
SPARE THOU THOSE WHO CONFESS THEIR SINS.
RESTORE THOU THOSE WHO ARE PENITENT
ACCORDING TO THY PROMISES DECLARED UNTO MANKIND IN CHRIST JESUS.
AND GRANT, O MOST MERCIFUL FATHER
THAT WE MAY HEREAFTER LIVE A GODLY, RIGHTEOUS, AND SOBER LIFE.
TO THE GLORY OF THY HOLY NAME. AMEN.

The Kyrie Eleison

Priest and people alternating:

Lord, have mercy upon us.
LORD, HAVE MERCY UPON US.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
CHRIST, HAVE MERCY UPON US.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
LORD, HAVE MERCY UPON US.

The Absolution

Priest:
Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness and live; and hath given power and commandment to his ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the absolution and remission of their sins: + He pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him which we do at this present, and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

The First Censing

Priest:
Let us pray.

Here the people shall offer silent prayers and the priest shall cense the altar.

Priest:
+ May this incense be blessed by him in whose honor it is to be burned. AMEN.

As this incense rises before thee, O Lord, so let our prayer be set forth in thy sight. Let thy Holy Angels encompass thy people and breathe forth upon them the spirit of thy blessing. AMEN.

The Introit

All stand for the introit for day.

Priest:
+ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Church:
AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING, IS NOW, AND FOREVER SHALL BE: WORLD WITHOUT END. AMEN.

Priest:
Let us pray.

The People kneel for the collect. The Priest recites the collect of the day.

The Readings

With the people seated one or two lessons, as appointed, are read, the Reader first saying:

Reader:
A Reading from ________________________.

After the reading, the Reader shall say:

Reader:
The Word of the Lord.

People:
THANKS BE TO GOD.

A Psalm or hymn may follow each reading.

The Reading of the Gospel

With all standing, here may be said or sung a gradual psalm, hymn, or an anthem. The Celebrant or Deacon may process into the midst of the people.

Deacon:
The Lord be with you.

People:
AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT.

Priest:
The Gospel lesson for today is written in St. ___________________________

At the conclusion of the Gospel lesson the priest shall say:

Priest:
The Gospel of the Lord.

People:
PRAISE BE TO THEE, O CHRIST.

The Sermon

Priest:
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer. AMEN.

The Nicene Creed

With all standing:

All:
I BELIEVE IN ONE GOD THE FATHER ALMIGHTY,
MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH,
AND OF ALL THINGS VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE.

AND IN ONE LORD JESUS CHRIST, THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD,
BEGOTTEN OF HIS FATHER BEFORE ALL AGES,
GOD OF GOD. LIGHT OF LIGHT.
VERY GOD OF VERY GOD.
BEGOTTEN, NO MADE,
BEING OF ONE SUBSTANCE WITH THE FATHER,
BY WHOM ALL THINGS WERE MADE;
WHO FOR US MEN, AND FOR OUR SALVATION CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN,
AND WAS INCARNATE BY THE HOLY SPIRIT OF THE VIRGIN MARY,
AND WAS MADE MAN,
AND WAS CRUCIFIED ALSO FOR US UNDER PONTIUS PILATE.
HE SUFFERED AND WAS BURIED,
AND THE THIRD DAY HE ROSE AGAIN ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES,
AND ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN,
AND SITTETH ON THE RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER.
AND HE SHALL COME AGAIN WITH GLORY
TO JUDGE BOTH THE QUICK AND THE DEAD:
WHOSE KINDOM SHALL HAVE NO END.

AND I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT,
THE LORD AND GIVER OF LIFE,
WHO PROCEEDETH FROM THE FATHER,
WHO WITH THE FATHER AND THE SON TOGETHER
IS WORSHIPPED AND GLORIFIED,
WHO SPAKE BY THE PROPHETS.
AND I BELIEVE IN ONE CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH.
I ACKNOWLEDGE ONE BAPTISM FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS.
AND I LOOK FOR THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD,
AND THE LIFE OF THE WORLD TO COME.
AMEN.

The Offertory

The people kneeling.

Priest:
We adore thee, O God, who art the source of all life and goodness and with true and thankful hearts we offer unto thee this token of thine own life giving gifts bestowed upon us, thou who art the giver of all.

Priest pours wine and water into the chalice.

According to immemorial custom, we now mix water with this wine, praying thee O Lord, that we may evermore abide in Christ and he in us.

Priest offers the cup.

We offer unto thee O Lord, this cup with joy and gladness; may the worship we offer ascend before thy divine majesty as a sacrifice pure and acceptable in thy sight; through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Second Censing of the Altar

With the people seated.

Lavabo

Psalm 26

I will wash my hands in innocency, O Lord, and so will I go unto thine altar.
That I may show the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.
Lord, I have loved the habitation of thine house,
And the place where thine honor dwelleth.
O shut not up my soul with the sinners, nor my life with the bloodthirsty:
In whose hands is wickedness, and their right hand is full of gifts.
But as for me, I will walk innocently: O deliver me and be merciful unto me.
My foot standeth right, I will praise the Lord in the congregations.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
AMEN.

The Orate Fratres

Priest:
May my prayer be as an incense offering in thy sight, my uplifted hands as an evening sacrifice. Set, O Lord, a watch over my mouth, and a guard over the door of my lips. Permit not my heart to turn to evil, seeking excuses for wickedness.

The people stand.

Priest:
Brothers and sisters, pray that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.

People:
MAY THE LORD ACCEPT THE SACRIFICE AT YOUR HANDS TO THE PRAISE AND GLORY OF HIS NAME, FOR OUR GOOD, AND FOR THE GOOD OF HIS HOLY CHURCH EVERYWHERE. AMEN.

Sursum Corda

Priest:
Lift up your hearts.

People:
WE LIFT THEM UP UNTO THE LORD.

Priest:
Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God.

People:
IT IS MEET AND RIGHT SO TO DO.

Priest:
It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting God; therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify they glorious name: evermore praising thee and saying:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, LORD,
GOD OF HOSTS,
HEAVEN AND EARTH
ARE FULL OF THY GLORY
HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST.
+ BLESSED IS HE THAT COMETH
IN THE NAME OF THE LORD
HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST.

The Canon

The people kneel for the Canon.

Priest:
Wherefore, O most loving Father, we thy servants do pray thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord, to receive and bless these + gifts, these + offerings, this + holy and spotless sacrifice. We offer this holy sacrifice first for thy holy catholic church, that it may please thee to grant her peace, to watch over her, to bring her unity, and to guide her throughout the world. Likewise, for thy servant .N. our bishop, for all our clergy and for all believers and professors of the orthodox, catholic, and apostolic faith.

The Commemoration of the Living

Be mindful, O Lord, of thy servants and handmaids, .N. and all here present whose faith and devotion are known unto thee for whom we offer and who themselves desire to offer, this sacrifice of praise. That it may avail for themselves, their families and friends, for the redemption of their souls, for the health and salvation which they desire and for which they now present their vows unto thee, the living and true God.

The Commemoration of the Departed

Remember, O Lord, thy servants and handmaids .N. who have gone before us with the sign of faith and rest in the sleep of peace. To these, O Lord, and all who rest in Christ, grant, we beseech thee, a place of refreshment, light, and peace. Through the same Christ our Lord. AMEN.

The Invocation

We beseech thee, O Most Merciful Father, to send thy Holy Spirit upon + us, and upon these elements of bread and wine, that the bread which we break + may be to us the Communion of the Body of Christ, and the Cup of Blessing which we bless + the Communion of the Blood of Christ.

We beseech thee to accept this, our service of praise and thanksgiving, together with the consecration of ourselves + unto thee, and to thy holy service, through thy Son, Jesus Christ. AMEN.

People:
WE GIVE THANKS UNTO THEE O LORD.

The Eucharistic Prayer

Priest:
Jesus Christ on the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread (here shall the priest take bread into his hand) and when he had given thanks, he broke it, (here shall the priest break the bread) and said, “Take, eat; this is My Body which is broken for you. This do in remembrance of me.”

After the same manner, also, he took the cup (here the priest shall take the cup into his hands) when he had supped saying, “This Cup is the New Testament in My Blood. This do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Wherefore having in remembrance his holy life, we, his servants, do set forth this memorial which he has commanded us to make.

Lord God Almighty, who alone art holy and who dost accept the sacrifice of praise from such as call upon thee with their whole heart, accept also the prayer of us sinners and receive us at thy holy altar. Enable us to present thee gifts and spiritual sacrifices for our sins and for the ignorance of thy people and count us worthy to find favor before thee that our sacrifice may be well pleasing and that the good spirit of thy grace may be upon + us, and upon these gifts + here set forth, and upon all thy people. Through the mercies of thy Son, Jesus, with whom and with thine all holy, gracious, and life giving spirit thou art blessed now and forever, world without end. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer

The Litany of Peace

Priest:
The Lord be with you.

People:
And with your spirit.

Priest: Let us pray.

Priest and people alternating:

Lord, Heavenly Father help us to become peacemakers, that we may be called, “The Children of God.”

LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER, AND GRANT US THY PEACE.

Lord, Heavenly Father, help us purge ourselves of those attributes which make not for peace but which set the stage for war.

LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER, AND GRANT US THY PEACE.

Lord, open our minds to see ourselves as Thou seest us, or even, as others see us, and save us from all unwillingness to know our infirmities.

LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER, AND GRANT US THY PEACE.

From all hasty utterances of impatience; from the retort of irritation and the taunt of sarcasm; from all infirmity of temper in provoking or being provoked; from love of unkind gossip, and from all idle words that may do hurt, save us, O Lord.

LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER, AND GRANT US THY PEACE.

Grant us, O Lord, the strength to obey Thy commandments, that we defraud our brother in nothing. May we never commit adultery or do anything to disturb our neighbor’s home or family.

LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER, AND GRANT US THY PEACE.

Lord, Heavenly Father, grant that we covet nothing that is our neighbors, neither his house, nor his auto, his bank account, his job, nor anything that is our neighbors.

LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER, AND GRANT US THY PEACE.

Heavenly Father, help us to maintain peace within our own households, with our neighbors in our communities, within our own nations, and in the world.

LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER, AND GRANT US THY PEACE.

Lord, Heavenly Father we pray not only for the absence of war, but more especially for Thy peace, which passeth all understanding.

LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER, AND GRANT US THY PEACE.

Lord, Heavenly Father, grant us Christ’s wish that we may become One with Him, and with Thee; that in union with Thee, we may desire only what Thou dost desire, and thus come to know Thy perfect peace.

LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER, AND GRANT US THY PEACE, THIS DAY AND FOR EVERMORE. AMEN.

Benediction

All:
WE BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHER
THE DIGNITY OF FREEDOM,
WHICH WE ABUSED AND ARE ABUSING STILL.
AND SENT HIS SON, JESUS, TO SAVE,
NOT TO CONDEMN.

WE BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST,
BORN AS GOD-WITH-US,
WHO TAUGHT US IN PARABLES,
WHO PERFORMED SIGNS AND WONDERS,
WHO HEALED THE SICK,
TOUCHED THE UNCLEAN,
RECEIVED FAILURES AND
WELCOMED THEM TO HIS FEAST.
HE TRAINED COMMON PEOPLE AS DISCIPLES
AND SENT THEM INTO THE WORLD
WITH HIS SAVING LOVE.

HE WAS BETRAYED, REJECTED,
MOCKED, TORTURED, AND CRUCIFIED.
BUT HE ROSE FROM DEATH
AND IS ALIVE AND WITH US ALWAYS,
AND LIVES IN US, THE HOPE OF GLORY,
INDWELLING AND FILLING US
THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT.
WE BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT
THE ETERNAL DANCE OF LOVE:
FATHER, SON, AND SPIRIT,
MUTUALLY INDWELLING,
MOVING FOR, WITH, IN,
AND THROUGH CREATION,
FOREVER AND EVER.

AMEN.

The people may kneel. The prayers of the people are according
to the form provided, some other form, or extemporaneous.
Celebrant or Deacon and people alternating:

Let us offer our prayers to God the Father, in the Name of his Son, and the strength of his Spirit, saying: “To you, O Lord.”

For the world we live in, for sun and rain and good soil, and for wisdom in our stewardship of this world, we offer this prayer.
TO YOU, O LORD.

For those in poverty, famine, or hardship of any kind, we offer this prayer.
TO YOU, O LORD.

For the leaders of the world, especially .N. our President, that they might remember the needs of all your people; for justice, freedom, and the end of war and hunger, we offer this prayer.
TO YOU, O LORD.

For our enemies, for the enemies of our country, for our own persecutors, even for those who threaten the peace of our memories, remembering that your Son died for their souls as for ours, we offer this prayer.
TO YOU, O LORD.

For the sick and the dying, and for all who turn to you in hope, that you would love them, forgive them, and ease their pain, we offer this prayer.
TO YOU, O LORD.

For all who need and ask our prayers, especially __________, we offer this prayer.
TO YOU, O LORD.

For our church, that we might be a beacon of light for those in need, we offer this prayer.
TO YOU, O LORD.

For .N. our Bishop, and .N. our Pastor, for all Bishops, Priests, Deacons, and other ministers, we offer this prayer.

In thanksgiving for all our blessings, for the salvation of our souls, the answer to our prayers, and the joy of this day, we offer this prayer.
TO YOU, O LORD.

Priest:
O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O Lover of Souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever. AMEN.

Confession of Sin

The following form of confession is intended to instill the practice of reconciliation and not to supplant it. Every Christian should avail themselves of the Sacrament of Reconciliation often, by making a regular confession to a priest in a private setting.

Priest:
Dear brothers and sisters let us call to mind our sins against God, our neighbor, ourselves and the world.

The people may kneel. Silence may be kept.

All:
GOD OF ALL MERCY, WE CONFESS
THAT WE HAVE SINNED AGAINST YOU,
BY RESISTING YOUR WILL IN OUR LIVES.

WE CONFESS THAT WE HAVE SINNED AGAINST OUR NEIGHBORS,
BY NOT HONORING THEM AS YOU WOULD HAVE US TO DO.

WE CONFESS THAT WE HAVE SINNED AGAINST OURSELVES,
BY NOT LIVING ACCORDING TO YOUR WILL AND IN YOUR WAYS.

WE CONFESS THAT WE HAVE SINNED AGAINST YOUR WORLD,
BY ABUSING AND WASTING THE GIFTS OF YOUR GOODNESS.

REACH OUT YOUR SAVING HAND AND RESCUE US FROM OUR SINS.
FORGIVE, RESTORE, AND STRENGTHEN US
THROUGH OUR SAVIOR, YOUR SON, JESUS CHRIST.

GRANT IN YOUR MERCY
THAT WE MAY ABIDE IN YOUR LOVE,
AND SERVE ONLY YOUR WILL IN OUR LIVES
FOR ALL YOUR PEOPLE, AND FOR ALL YOUR CREATION. AMEN.

The Bishop, when present, or the Priest, stands and says:

Priest:
May Almighty God have mercy on you, + forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in everlasting life. AMEN.

The Peace

Priest:
May the God of love fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People:
AND ALSO WITH YOU.

The Ministers and people may greet each other with a sign of peace.

The Offertory

Priest:
O Lord our God, you are worthy to receive glory and honor and power; because you have created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.

The gifts to be offered to God are placed on the altar. As they are
brought forward, a hymn may be sung. The people stand to sing.

The people may kneel. As he offers the bread, the Celebrant says:

Priest:
Kindly receive us, O Lord, for we are humble in spirit and penitent of heart, and may the sacrifice we offer this day in the breaking of this bread be pleasing to you, our living and true God. AMEN.

The Celebrant mixes wine and water and offering the chalice he says:

Priest:
We offer to you, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, imploring your mercy, that our offering may rise with a pleasing fragrance before your divine majesty for the salvation of ourselves and for that of the whole world. AMEN.

The Censing of the Altar

The Celebrant blesses the incense and censing the altar shall say:

Priest:
May this incense be + blessed by him in whose honor it is to be burned. AMEN.

As this incense rises before you O Lord, so let our prayers be set forth in your sight. Let your Holy Angels encompass your people and breathe forth upon them the spirit of your blessing. AMEN.

The Lavabo Psalm 26

With the people seated the Celebrant blesses
the water and washes his hands while saying:

Priest:
I will wash my hands in innocence, O Lord,
That I may go in procession round your altar,
Singing aloud a song of thanksgiving
And recounting all your wonderful deeds.
Lord, I love the house in which you dwell
And the place where your glory abides.
Do not sweep me away with sinners,
Nor my life with those who thirst for blood,
Whose hands are full of evil plots,
And their right hand full of bribes.
As for me, I will live with integrity;
Redeem me, O Lord, and have pity on me.
My foot stands on level ground;
In the full assembly I will bless the Lord.

The Sursum Corda and Sanctus

Then shall follow all standing, the Celebrant
facing and alternating with the people:

Priest:
The Lord be with you.

People:
AND ALSO WITH YOU.

Priest:
Lift up your hearts.

People:
WE LIFT THEM TO THE LORD.

Priest:
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People:
IT IS RIGHT TO GIVE HIM THANKS AND PRAISE.

Then facing the altar the Celebrant proceeds:

Priest:
It is good and joyful that in your presence we give you thanks, Holy God.
You include us in creation and you made us in your glorious image.
You remember us from our beginning, and feed us with your constant love.
You redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body with your Son.
Through your Spirit you replenish us, and call us to fullness of life.

A proper preface may be said.

Therefore, joining with angels and archangels and with all the faithful
in every generation, we give voice with all your creation as we sing (say):

All:
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, LORD,
GOD OF POWER AND MIGHT,
HEAVEN AND EARTH
ARE FULL OF YOUR GLORY
HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST.
+ BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES
IN THE NAME OF THE LORD
HOSANNA IN THE HIGHEST.

The Canon

The people shall kneel.

Priest:
Most generous, self-giving God, we celebrate your gift of creation. We rejoice that you formed us in your image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and reflect your bountiful grace.

Through Abraham and Sarah you blessed us with a holy heritage. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us through our journey in the wilderness, and brought us to your land.

You called us to be a holy people and sanctified us with your worship. You raised up prophets from among us that we might realize and practice the fullness of your promise.

But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we failed to see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love.

Yet you did not abandon us to sin and death, but you sent Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be our Savior.

United with us by his incarnation through Mary and the Holy Spirit, born into our human family, he showed us the way of freedom and life.

Walking among us, he touched us with his healing and transforming power, and showed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil and became our salvation.

Celebrant is to hold the bread or lay a hand upon it and at the words concerning the cup to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing the wine to be consecrated.

In obedience to this command, O God:

All:
WE CELEBRATE HIS LIFE, DEATH AND RESURRECTION,
AS WE AWAIT THE DAY OF HIS COMING.

Priest:
Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us + gathered here and upon these gifts of bread and wine. May this be a time of transformation, nurture and healing. Make this bread and wine be for us the + Body and + Blood of Christ, so that through your power we may be for the world the Body of Christ, redeemed by his Blood.

By the healing power of your Spirit make us one in Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to the whole world. Nourished by your life, send us forth to seek out your lost sheep and to bring healing to your wounded ones. Help us mirror Christ’s love in this broken world, inspiring hope in the lives of those who suffer until Christ returns and all together we feast at his promised heavenly banquet.

Celebrant shall elevate the bread over the cup.

Through him and with him and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, now and forever, world without end. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer

Priest:
And now, as our Lord Jesus has taught us, we pray:

All:
OUR FATHER, ABOVE US, IN US AND AROUND US
MAY YOUR NAME BE ALWAYS BLESSED.
HERE TO EARTH, MAY YOUR KINGDOM COME.
HERE ON EARTH, MAY YOUR WILL BE DONE
AS IT IS IN PARADISE.
GIVE US TODAY OUR BREAD FOR THIS DAY.
AND FORGIVE US OUR WRONGS
AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO WRONG US.
LET US NOT WEAKEN
AND LIBERATE US FROM EVIL.
FOR THE KINGDOM IS YOURS AND YOURS ALONE,
AND THE POWER IS YOURS AND YOURS ALONE,
AND THE GLORY IS YOURS AND YOURS ALONE.
AMEN.

The Breaking of the Bread

The Celebrant breaks the bread, and says the following:

Priest:
We are the Body of Christ, the broken body and the blood poured out.

People:
WE BEHOLD WHO WE ARE; MAY WE BECOME ONE WITH THE ONE WE RECEIVE.

The House Church Movement
By Bishop Karl Pruter

The Church began not in some cathedral or building set aside for the purpose, bit in an obscure upper room in Jerusalem. In its earliest years, all the churches met in houses. Paul speaks of the congregation which meets in the house of Priscilla and Aquilla; and in another epistle he greets the church which meets at Phileon’s house.

As the Church grew, many congregations became too large to meet in someone’s home, and special buildings were erected to house the worshiping crowd. There were some obvious advantages to a public building; and soon the house churches disappeared.

Today, however, the house church is experiencing a revival; and for increasing numbers of people, it has a special and unique appeal.

In the early house churches, the congregations were small and the members were on intimate terms one with another. Scores of experimental congregations of the so-called underground church have found the simplicity and the closeness of house worship refreshing and inspiring.

Among several American communions, it is not new but has developed because many of their congregations have been small. Often times their smallness came about because of these groups’ single-minded concern with worship. They had no need to erect special buildings, because they did not set out to win people through a round of social and educational activities that had little or nothing to do with the Gospel. Hence, those seeking to get acquainted with the community or to find something to do with their spare time do not seek a house church, but look elsewhere to large institutional churches of various denominations. These house churches are content to seek out those who want to come to the Lord’s table to break bread together in the Presence of the Living Christ.

By limiting themselves to the preaching of the Gospel and remaining small, many communions have discovered some interesting advantages in house chapels.

Most important is that all who come are seeking to find God. There are few social, business, or political advantages to attending worship with a small group meeting in a private home. Consequently, there is a wonderful feeling of fellowship and a common goal and purpose among the worshipers in a house chapel.

In house chapels the congregations are small enough so that there are never any strangers. Every member knows every other member and is aware if his needs. The early Christians were noted for their love for one another. If modern Christians seem to lack this quality, it may be due, in part, to their tendency to become part of congregations so large that they do not even know the names of many of the members, and hence could not possibly know of their needs. We come to love those we know and those we serve.

A personal advantage is that I, as a host to a house church, am thrilled by the privilege to having Christ as a guest in my house. The table is set, often the very one at which my family sups, and the feast is shared with Christ and his disciples. Thus for me and my family, He is not far away in some distant church edifice, but He is truly in our midst.

Those who come to share this experience with me must also be struck by the immediacy of Christ’s presence. In building chapels and cathedrals, we have unconsciously put God is his place; and although we say He is everywhere, we oftentimes do not feel it. For many, the celebration of the Liturgy in the house has revealed with striking force that God does indeed wish to enter into our homes and into our lives.

There are also some practical considerations. Many Christians questions the money that goes into church buildings and would prefer to see more go into missions, to feeding the poor, and the the church’s ministry to the sick of body, mind, and spirit.

If we read the signs of the times correctly, the state is greedily eyeing church property, and through its taxing power will soon strip the church of much of its material wealth. The congregations which meet in houses will not be affected, and hence their energy will not be spent in protecting their property; they will be free to offer the Gospel and the Sacraments to the ever increasing needy multitude.

Finally, by meeting in a house, it becomes easier, somehow, to understand what the Church is. Too many of us grow up thinking of the Church as a building. The building often has hallowed memories; and our worship of God becomes so closely associated with the little church down the lane, that we cannot imagine worship apart from its sacred walls.

But a god who is limited to the four walls of a special building is no god at all. If we allow outward symbols to get in our way, we will never clearly see God.

For God has but one special dwelling that He seeks. He wants to dwell within you and me, even as He wants us to dwell in Him. At the Liturgy, wherever it is celebrated, Christ speaks to us. The great cathedral properly appreciated should serve to draw us to the Christ who is present at the altar. Its high clear-story and splendid stained glass windows should all serve to remind us of the glory that is His. They must not then become ends, but rather means.

In the same fashion, the humbleness of your neighbor’s house in which the Church meets, even as it did in Philemon’s house, should not distract you from the wonderful event which is taking place there. For Jesus has promised that where two or three are gathered together in His name, He will be there. He is there, and you and a few close friends are sharing this wonderful experience together. The very intimacy, the very closeness of this church meeting in a living room, dining room, or kitchen will make Christ’s coming the most exciting and meaningful fact in your life.

If you have worshiped in one of the many house churches across the nation, you know how your life has been enriched by the experience. Even members of large congregations are coming to know the value of the house church. In Scotland the “house kirk” movement has come not to supplant regular Sunday worship but to supplement it by mid-week communions to help members better understand their Christian duties and life.

We invite you to ask your pastor to arrange for the celebration of the Liturgy in your home or in some home in your neighborhood. It may deepen your faith; or if you have strayed away from church, start you on the road to renewal.

Whether you choose to worship in a humble cottage or in a splendid cathedral, the house church movement should help remind you of a central fact concerning our faith. Christ’s Church is not a house made by hands, but is as Paul described it, “the mystical Body of Christ.” It is made up of believers who are its members, and of Christ who is its Head. The Christian who worships in truth sees not the walls about him but has eyes for Christ alone from whom he draws his strength and direction.
